GARY HOEY - DUST & BONES Release: 29 July 2016 Under: Mascot / Provogue First off I have to say Gary did a great job on this album paying homage to many of his influences. This album has a lot of great licks, excellent slide playing, nice tight background vocals, wah drenched riffs and some heavy backing guitars. There is a lot of traditional playing on "Dust & Bones" as well as some great modern sounding playing. Dust & Bones kicks off with "Boxcar Blues" a slide guitar song that's reminiscent of Robert Johnson. Boxcar Blues has a traditional sound and feel to it with tight backing vocals. Next is "Who's Your Daddy" this song has jump blues feel and some greats licks through out. "Born To Love You" has a cool wah intro and reminded me of Billy Gibbons while listening to the vocals and the pinch harmonics in the solo. "Dust & Bones" the title track of the album was very laid back and had some nice feel changes through out the song. The solo in this song is probably the most modern sounding solo on the CD, Gary does a great job of hinting at the neo classical sound with out fully going there."Steamroller" is a very nice tip of the hat to Johnny Winter, it has some great slide guitar work in it. "Coming Home" joins Gary with Lita Ford for a ballad. The vocals in this song are very good and they blend very well together. "Ghost Of Yesterday" makes nice use of the wah pedal, Gary has great control of the wah and doesn't let it get out of hand. This tune has a cool section in the solo and some pretty fast licks in the outro solo. "This Time Tomorrow" another tip of the hat this time to Robin Trower. Great use of Uni-vibe on this tune, a cool climbing progression in the chorus and a great solo. "Back Up Against The Wall" has a great feel to it and lots of nice guitar work. "Blind Faith" has some heavy sounding backing guitars and again some great slide work from Gary. "Soul Surfer" is a nice instrumental that has some great licks through out the entire song. This song reminded me a bit of both SRV and Dick Dale. Over all "Dust & Bones" is a great cd, Gary did and excellent job and this album should please his traditional fans as well as his fans that like his more modern playing. If you haven't had the chance to listen to this album yet, I recommend it. Take Care James
